ON THE RAG
The stigma of menstruation is something that I wish to eradicate through the use of fashion and it is no mistake that this political stance is shown visually on a women’s body. I try to over-use aspects and techniques of women’s wear such as darts and hook & eyes to promote the female form even more. I chose to dye my fabrics naturally, using only hot water and avocado pits. Understanding that the toxins that come from chemically dying fabric can be as harmful as the mental toxins that come from shaming and silencing women, especially around the topic of periods. Finding stains on clothing while menstruating is common, so staining cotton with the water from boiled avocado pits ties all of my motifs together.
